The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting standard is a tool for measuring, managing, reporting and interpreting community impact generated by the Australian community housing sector.

The standard was commissioned by CHIA in 2022 and launched in March 2023 to provide a framework for consistent, comparable and transparent reporting by community housing organisations (CHOs) on their ESG performance and to clearly and credibly demonstrate the positive impact they have through their tenancy and asset management and property development activities.

Since the initial launch, a second version of the framework has been developed in consultation with housing providers, financial institutions and industry partners.

At present, the Standard is voluntary and has been developed for, and in consultation with, the community housing sector to ensure that it supports their needs and fulfils the goal of making sector value more transparent to lenders and investors.

The ESG framework has been developed with the support of Housing Australia, the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation and many of ACH’s community housing members, with the work being led by SGS Economics and Planning and Ritterwald. Further information on the development of the ESG reporting standard can be found here.
